A shortboard is a high-performance surfboard between 5’6″ and 6’10” in length, with a pointed nose and a tri-fin or quad-fin setup — designed for quick, responsive surfing in steep waves.
Shortboards are the dominant board type in professional competitive surfing. Their reduced volume demands greater skill: catching waves is harder, the pop-up must be faster, and balance demands are higher — making them unsuitable for beginners but rewarding for surfers who build foundational skills first.
Shortboards enable performance manoeuvres: sharp bottom turns, vertical re-entries, cutbacks, snaps, and aerials. Barrel riding on a shortboard demands deep understanding of wave timing.
The transition from longboard to shortboard is a key milestone. OCSC’s High Performance program guides surfers through this with a structured progression.
