The pop-up is the explosive transition from lying prone on a surfboard to standing in a balanced surf stance — the single most important foundational skill for any beginner surfer to master.

A correct pop-up happens in one fluid motion: push up with both hands near the chest, bring both feet under the body simultaneously, and arrive in a low centred stance with knees bent and arms out. Feet land shoulder-width apart, back foot over the fins.

Common mistakes include a slow two-step pop-up (kneeling first), feet placed too close together, or standing too upright. OCSC instructors drill the pop-up on the sand during every Learn to Surf lesson before students enter the water.

A fast, controlled pop-up means the surfer is standing earlier — giving more time to read the wave and set up manoeuvres. Advanced surfers in the High Performance program refine pop-up speed as a foundation for barrel riding.
