A longboard is a surfboard measuring 9 feet or longer, characterised by high volume and a rounded nose — the most stable and accessible board type for beginners.
Longboards make catching waves easier, provide a stable platform for practising the pop-up, and allow students to ride gentle whitewater before progressing to the open face. OCSC uses foam-top soft longboards for all beginner lessons — safer and more forgiving than hard fibreglass boards.
Beyond the beginner stage, longboards remain popular for classic logging style. Signature moves include cross-stepping toward the nose and hanging five or ten toes over the tip.
Longboards are not ideal for steep, powerful waves. Compare with the shortboard, which trades stability for agility.
